The biggest tip of all: decide what you want. This may sound like an obvious thing but if you have a clear idea of what you would like to achieve, why and when by it makes everything else much easier. ie are you doing it for art's sake (much of the following will not apply) for fun ( some of the following will apply) as a career (all of the following will apply) If you want to release a record all of the following will be essential. Presentation is of utmost importance as the people you will need to impress receive a lot of material everyday.

Live is a funny one. Some people say it is essential and others not. I guess that mostly depends on what sort of music you make. Enya, I believe does not gig yet has sold 75 million plus records! If you do want to gig you'll need to get in touch with promoters and venues There are many opportunities to play. You could run your own night, support other bands, play festivals...
